When I heard from my friend about a course in Indic philosophy, I was skeptical. I have read a lot of philosophy. Much of it has shaped my world view. But in the months preceding the course, I was feeling greater and greater indifference to philosophy. The reason: I felt I had played in the inner recesses of my mind long enough. I felt like it was time to actually use the philosophy that I studied in a practical form. It was a question of knowledge vs. application. I had a lot of knowledge about philosophy, but limited practical application. Despite this, I thought I give the course a try.
I must say that the course was extremely practical. There are a lot of things that one can take away from the course and apply in one’s life. The most important of which is: “Be accepting of and comfortable with who and what you are”. The instructor is a man who has dedicated much of his life to deciphering the significance of life. To get there, he studied a wide variety of fields ranging from astronomy to music. What this has given him is a composite understanding to formulate a framework of life. That framework allows us to answer some of the most important questions that we have:
* Who is GOD? What is our relationship with him?
* What is the purpose of life?
* Why do events unfold the way they do?
* How does one be at his best?
* How does one enjoy life to the fullest?
* How does one connect with people?
* Why do certain people get along well with each other?
The class was very enjoyable and definitely changed me for the better. What specific effect it had on me is difficult for me to point out. There were so many subtle changes that it would be hard to point out one. Even though the concepts that were being discussed were of great importance, the class had a very relaxed atmosphere. A lot of discussion and questioning is encouraged making it very engaging.
I would definitely encourage people to give the course a shot. What has one got to lose?
